If you’re not as familiar with the concept of transferable skills, this blog is for you.

We won’t go into listing different types of skills, we’ve got already content on the topic that answers the question “What transferable skills can I bring to a job?” and you can find that here:

Transferable skills are vital across countless industries and job roles. Many employers will greatly value your transferable skills and how you can relate these to the role, sometimes more than your past experience!

Transferable Skills Definition

So, what is a transferable skill? The University of Pennsylvania defines them as “Measurable abilities of knowledge that hold value in any role or industry”.

A crucial thing to remember is that transferable skills translate across professions and fields, they really do set you up for a successful career path, especially in hospitality jobs.

Here at Westgate Resorts, we place a strong emphasis on professional development, adaptability, employee success, and internal mobility. We’ll help you develop your transferable skills from the moment you step into a career with us.

In the hospitality industry, some transferable skills necessary for successful employment include leadership, communication, customer service, and problem-solving.

Customer-centric skills and team collaboration are the heart of what we do, especially when it comes to crafting memorable guest experiences. Skill versatility in a fast-paced, guest-driven environment is certainly important—you’ve got to think fast on your feet and respond to dynamic customer needs as well as industry demands.

No matter what department you find yourself in, you’re guaranteed to pick up new skills and develop existing ones at Westgate Resorts.

How Do I Identify My Transferable Skills?

It’s always hard to sell yourself when looking for a new job, it can be a challenge to identify what you’re good at to put on your resume.

Here’s our advice:

  1. Conduct a transferable skills analysis - think back to your previous roles and time in education, what skills did you refine? Make a note of these to add to your resume. Always tailor your resume to the job you’re applying for!
  2. Make a transferable skills checklist - research common and in-demand transferable skills and check them off if you’ve been able to demonstrate these in your career or education.

The more transferable skills you can highlight to us in your resume the better! These skills are guaranteed to open doors for career progression at Westgate Resorts.
